When Sergio’s father, the famed film producer Italo Zingarelli, purchased the Rocca delle Macìe estate in 1973, he embarked on a new career as one of Tuscany’s more unlikely wine producers. With quality as his top priority, the estate thrived. Today, with Sergio at the helm, this illustrious estate produces rich, intense and complex wines and ranks among the best-selling Chianti Classico producers in Italy.
Sergio Zingarelli was born in Rome on December 29, 1958 to Italo Zinagarelli and Maria Laura Spano. After attending a science-focused school, Sergio went on to be awarded a Degree in Economics and Commerce from Rome's La Sapienza University.
In 1984, he joined his father at the helm of the family winery, concentrating first on the Italian market and, subsequently, on the development of the winery's international distribution network. In 1985, he married Daniela Maccaferri - who today works with him to support the running of the business - and they left Rome once and for all to live in Castellina in Chianti. The couple has two children: Andrea, born in 1986, and Giulia, born three years later.
In that same year, 1989, Sergio became Managing Director of Rocca delle Macìe, and in 2000 he was named President. His passion and commitment have led to great success under his tenure. Since 1995, Sergio has been a member of the Executive Board of the Chianti Classico Consortium and in 2012 he was appointed as Vice President.
He is also President of the "Friends of the Opera" consortium (Amici della Lirica), which since 1991 has organized an International Opera Singers' Competition, held annually at Rocca delle Macìe. This contest is geared towards helping young singers make their mark in the opera world and to promote bel canto within the rich cultural heritage of the region. Since 2001, Sergio has been a member of the Italian Cookery Academy, and has been a member of Siena's Rotary Club for more than a decade.
Sergio is very much a lover of sport, having played volleyball and soccer for a decade. He is a rock-solid supporter of the Roma soccer team, in the tradition of the Zingarelli family. Over the last few years, he has been running on a regular basis, and, showing great determination, he has taken part in numerous marathons across the world, including several in NYC.
